Boolean Commands Made Simple

  • Step One: List the keywords from your research topic.
  • Example: cancer, treatment, medicine, cure, prevention

  • Step Two: Select the words that you think are the most important. In doing this, think about the words that are essential in explaining your topic.
  • Example: cancer, treatment

  • Step Three: Combine these keywords and AND. This instructs the computer that both words must occur.

  • Step Four: Now use more of your original keywords, introducing them into the equation one by one. Use OR to separate them, and enclose the OR statement in parentheses.
  • Example: cancer and (treatment or cure)

Spend some time playing with this technique; it can produce some excellent results.
